Newest Sony Flagship Xperia Z3 Arrives

Sony finally unveiled the Xperia Z3, 6 months after the Xperia Z2. It still follows Sony's OmniBalance design philosophy but this time with a rounded frame. With this, comes the reductions to thickness (from 8.2 mm to 7.3 mm), bezel size, overall dimensions (146 mm x 72 mm), and weight (from 162 g to 152 g). The Sony flagship smartphone is still IP68-certified for its dust and water resistance. It retains the premium body of its predecessor, with a frame made out of aluminum and tempered glass used for the front and back panels. It also comes with the same S-Force Front Surround stereo speakers found in its predecessor.

For the display, Sony sticked with a 5.2-inch IPS unit with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels resulting in a pixel density of 424 ppi. Sony did buck the Quad HD flagship display trend with the Xperia Z3. The smartphone's display still has TRILUMINOS technology along with Live Colour and X-Reality engines for a better image. In terms of computing prowess, the Xperia Z3 fails to impress with its Snapdragon 801 chipset as most newer flagships now sports a Snapdragon 805 chipset. There is 3GB RAM on board and 16GB/32GB of internal storage expandable via a microSD card slot. Everything will be powered by a relatively smaller 3,100 mAh battery cell.

Imaging-wise, the Sony Xperia Z3 retains the 20.7-MP camera unit of its predecessor, along with the larger-than-average 1/2.3'' Exmor RS sensor. However, it now sports a 25 mm wide-angled G Lens, which should give the camera a wider field of view. Sony is also adding new features to the camera software, including Face in (shoots two videos), AR fun (scribble over images), Sound Photo, and SteadyShot digital image stabilization tech. The Xperia Z3 comes with Android 4.4.4 KitKat with its proprietary Xperia UI on top. It also has support for NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, and Cat 4 LTE speeds of up to 150 Mbps. In some regions, Sony will also sell the new flagship in a dual-SIM flavor. It will be available in White, Black, Copper, and Silver Green color options. It is expected to roll out globally in the autumn of 2014 and to be priced identically to its predecessor, about 569 euros without a contract.
